‘Play and Puppets’, the second temporary exhibition in 2015, was the result of yet another collaboration between TOPIC and Los Titiriteros de Binéfar. Initially envisioned as an exhibition on paper-puppet theatre, centred around the collection of tiny stages that this company keeps in their Casa de los Títeres de Abizanda (Huesca), it ended up becoming an exposition that reflects on the tight relationship between toys and the puppet’s very essence, which is to endow an inanimate object with life, voice and movement.
The exhibition featured toys that sat on the frontier between the worlds of puppets and toys, in addition to proper toy-puppets, playing books, paper stages, cut-touts, etc. They conformed a whole universe that brings to mind, especially to more adult minds, childhood and a charming world of imagination and discovery.
Already in the year 2011, TOPIC held a retrospective exposition on this company where a great deal of their shows was conducted. Some of these had already been performed more than once in Tolosa’s own Titirijai festival.
This exhibition broke with the long-established tradition here at TOPIC of organising our expositions based on origin⎯country or region⎯,since it was decided to adopt a transversal point of view on the world of marionettes for its organisation, looking rather to reflect on when and how the puppet is born in our minds.
