In this cultural manifestation, which in Vietnam goes far beyond what we understand by culture as it pervades the everyday life of the people, the tales are usually constructed around the same topics: mythology, historical episodes and life in the countryside. In the end, the puppets work as a tool to bring people together.
The exposition showed thirty-six medium- and large-sized figures, some of which belong to our centre and our permanently exhibited. However, it was the first time that all of the figures used in a show were exhibited together.
Each puppet is placed on an islet of its own and surrounded by water. María San Sebastián, responsible for TOPIC’s museum, highlights that “it was impossible to reproduce a stage like the ones they use for these shows due to their sheer size and the enormous amount of water involved, which could even cause weight problems. But we wanted to include the water as it is the puppets’ natural element, so that is why we have placed them on smaller water-covered surfaces”.
Idoya Otegui, TOPIC’s director, stated that “visitors would be able to admire the exceptionally beautiful wooden figures, coloured and enamelled to show an array of vivid and bright hues. These figures talk to us about agriculture, fishing, leisure, the fauna, history, politics, mythology. That is, about their life”.
