On December 6, Mimaia will premiere the work “Goodbye, Welcome”, a production carried out in a creative residency at TOPIC.
This work tries to show, in the words of its creators, that there is no reason to be sad when saying goodbye because everyone in their daily lives faces them. “Even the very birth itself is a farewell,” says Dora Cantero, head of this Barcelona-based company.
Dora oversees the staging, direction and interpretation, as well as the texts and music. On this occasion she is accompanied by Nina Ledergerber, a Swiss woman who oversees the construction of the scenery, the puppets and the musical part. “I play the canary timple, the musical saw and the accordion, in addition to singing.” Explain.
“Goodbye Welcome” is the result of a year of work in which the three months spent at TOPIC have had special importance. They were clear that they wanted to work on this show outside of Barcelona and since Dora knew Titirijai and TOPIC, they decided to apply for the creation residency. “We talked to the directors of the center, we presented the project to them, they accepted it, and here we are,” says Ledergerber.
The work premieres at TOPIC as the culmination of the Puppet Festival and is aimed at a family audience. Then they plan to take it to the Teatro Circo de Murcia and repeat it in the TOPIC programming in July when the Summer School of the International Puppetry Union (Unima), which will take place at the International Puppet Center of Tolosa.
Mimaia is a word that children in some areas of the Levant use in the game of hide-and-seek and that is used to save themselves.
Mimaia Teatro emerged in 2008 with the purpose of creating “that refuge, a place where we can “save” the children who still live in us,” says Dora Cantero. Her first show was “Arbequina”, which has been programmed at the Titirijai. of this year.
Mimaia focuses her work on research into puppet and object theater. In 2010 the company moved to Barcelona, where it found the musician, puppeteer and plastic artist, Mina Ledergerber, who became part of the company. During 2010 Mimaia Teatro performs in venues and halls in Barcelona, adapting the show to the particularity of each space and creating a closeness with the spectator as a firm commitment to more direct communication with the public.
