The creative residencies are still active at TOPIC and proof of this is that these days the Teatro Saco de Bones company is preparing its new show, “Edgar”.
Bag of Bones Theater is made up of Ángel Navarro and his puppets, although Ángel Navarro discovered theater and the art of puppetry in the Raval neighborhood in Barcelona. He trained in the performing arts at the Víctor Hernández Theater-Studio and discovered the art of puppet construction at Pepe Otal’s puppet house-workshop. Along the way he learned from other master puppeteers such as Stephen Mottram. This passion for theater suspended by threads has made him travel around the world showing his shows in cabarets, theater halls, venues and on the street.
“I already knew about TOPIC 9 years ago, when I came as a set builder and we stayed here, in the residence. What we are looking for when coming to Tolosa is technical help because we couldn’t rehearse in our workshop and the work is at a point where we had to start investigating the lights and in this residence, we can do it,” says Angel Navarro.
The show that Taller Saco de Bones is preparing is titled “Edgar” and is a montage of shadows, objects, and puppets. It tells us the last two years of Edgar Alan Poe’s life after the death of his wife and how he enters a spiral of self-destruction. “We use his figure of a tormented soul to talk about losses, a certain inefficiency when dealing with reality that leads to delirium and madness and, in the end, his death. Our company has always had a slightly macabre, dark tone, which is why the figure of Poe comes to mind”.
For this work, Angel has the collaboration of a French musician, Franck-Olivier De Faux, who has composed the music for the show and, in addition to playing it live, manipulates some of the objects.
The show will premiere in Tolosa on November 24 at the Titirijai. After Tolosa they go to Barcelona to do another residency with Eric de Sarriá “to perfect and gain ease for the premiere”.
