TOPIC’s seventh temporary exhibition was dedicated to the Arketal company-workshop, based in Cannes, France, and featured a hundred and fifty high artistic-quality pieces.
This company, directed by Greta Bruggeman and Sylvie Osman, stands out because of the beauty of their pieces and the plasticity and versatility of the materials with which they are made. In 2011, the exhibition was chosen to coincide with Titirijai’s 29th edition due to its great artistic and technical value.
According to Greta Bruggeman, visitors can enjoy the particular way in which the company works: “We are an open company. Our objective is to work with other visual artists so that they can produce the puppets for our shows, as well as the set designs”.
Marius Rech, painter and one of the artists that work with the company, helped set up the exposition. He believes that “the work of the puppeteer is made the richer by that of the visual artist, and vice versa, since we learn a lot about the elasticity of puppets”.
Created in 1984 by Greta Bruggeman y Sylvie Osman, both former students in Institut International de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mézières, the company’s headquarters is located in Cannes since 1990. They have produced twenty-four shows for children, adults and all types of audiences with the collaboration of puppeteers, actors, authors, musicians, set designers, painters and sculptures. “Each of our works is a journey, a dialogue with the collaborators that accompany us. The topics we use talk about identity, memory, exile, family and the human element”.
